Accessibility statement

We want everyone to be able to use this directory, whatever their eyesight, hearing, hands or device.

This website aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. We test it with a keyboard, a screen reader and at 200 percent zoom on a tablet.

On this page: what the website does, what we know is not perfect yet, and how to tell us about a problem.

What this website does

Text is at least 20 pixels in size on every page, with nothing smaller in the corners.
Colours have strong contrast. Every colour theme meets the contrast rules.
You can make the text bigger with the Text size buttons at the top of every page, or with your browser's zoom.
You can choose a different colour theme, including a high contrast black and yellow theme.
Everything works with a keyboard alone. The Tab key moves between links and buttons, and you can always see where you are.
The site works with screen readers such as NVDA, JAWS and VoiceOver. Every button says what it does.
Buttons and links are large and spaced out so they are easy to press.
There are no hidden menus and nothing moves on its own.
There are no time limits. You can take as long as you like on any page.
The words are plain. Short sentences, everyday words, and labels that say what they do.
The site works without JavaScript and on slow connections.
Macrons in Māori words display correctly, on screen and in the printed booklets.

What we know is not perfect yet

We are honest about the parts that still need work. Here is what we know about.

The map needs JavaScript to draw. If it does not load, the same listings are always in the list under it, and on the Find help page.
The video plays on YouTube's own player, which has its own buttons. There is no written transcript yet. You can turn on captions with the CC button in the player.
The PDF you download opens in your device's PDF reader. Some readers are easier to use than others. The printed booklet is the same content on paper.
Some listings have not been checked yet. They say so, and we ask you to call before you visit.

Tell us if something is hard to use

If any part of this website is hard to use, we want to know. Today there are two ways to tell us, and both are about listings. A way to report other problems is coming.

If something on a listing is wrong or out of date, press the Report a change button on that listing.
If a service, group or place is missing, use the Suggest a listing page to tell us about it.
